Goal setting

Today I thought I would focus on something positive, both for myself, and for you. Most of you have probably heard of the power of positive thinking, or the law of attraction, which states that your thoughts become your reality. I am not an avid believer in the concept, however I do think that there are important truths, that we can take away from it.

First of all, when we are focussed on what we want, we are more likely to take steps to work towards achieving it, rather than if we were to dwell on what we don’t want. Second, looking at life with a positive outlook, is likely to attract positive people, and positive experiences. This is because, when you are in a positive frame of mind, you are more attractive to other people, and you are also likely to be more productive.

Todays excerise is going include elements of the law of attraction. I am going to make a list of goals, things that I want to happen for me in the future, and then I am going to use my imagination to envision, what achieving these goals will look, and feel like. Obviously the next step, is to begin making small changes in my life, that will help me to reach these goals, but let’s take one step at a time.

Goal one: To earn my own money.

For the last few years, whilst studying I have been supporting myself using the student allowance/student loan. I am extremely grateful that New Zealand supports students in this way, enabling them to focus fully on their studies, but I now feel that it is time to re-enter the working world, even if it is just part time work. I am planning on taking a gap from study, so this is a good opportunity to achieve this goal, as I will have more time to dedicate to a job.

Goal two: To travel

I have already made the decision to take time away from study, to to travel and explore myself, however more specifically, I really want to visit places that I have never been to before. My more defined goal, in terms of travel, is to visit at least 10 places that I have never been before, whether this be a country, town, city, or even just a park.

Goal three: To finish a long writing project

Since I was very young, I have dreamed of writing and publishing my own book. Today, self publishing is so accessible, that the only thing standing in my way, is me. I would like to write a memoir, or self help book, once I have conquered more of my issues, but before that, I would also love to publish either a novel, or a collection of poetry/ short stories.

Goal four: To meet a long term companion

This goal may seem totally cheesy to those of you who don’t place finding love high on your list of priorities, and that is completely fine. For me, finding love is something that I am very passionate about (I’m a hopeless romantic, I know). Now, I am not saying that I expect to meet the love of my life tomorrow, or that I would even want to, but somewhere down the track, I do want to find that special person. I believe that love is the most important thing in life, and this includes the love you have for yourself. I am finally starting to love and accept who I am, and when I feel I have fully achieved this, then I will be ready to love and nurture someone else, in the same way.

Goal five: To finish my bachelor of nursing

I am allowing myself the next 6 months to a year, to take time off from my degree. However, one of my most important goals, is to graduate, as a registered nurse. Nursing is my passion, it makes me feel like I am truly able to make a difference in the world. I am fascinated by the human body, and how intricate every element of our physiology really is. I am looking forward to being involved in the health care industry in the future, and I want everyone to know, that my break from study has nothing to do with not loving nursing. It also has nothing to do with grades, I have achieved my best grades this year, and am really proud of this. I just feel that my mental, and physical health, need to be my main priority, and what I need right now is freedom.

So there you have it, my list of goals. I now encourage you to go and write up your own, whether they be short or long term. Once you know what your goals are, you can begin to envision what achieving them will be like. Take small steps towards achieving your dreams, and don’t be too hard on yourself when you experience set backs. To quote my favourite Disney princess “A dream is a wish your heart makes”. Follow your heart, and trust in yourself.
